The Barking Foundation is a private, non-profit foundation that provides grants for the undergraduate education of meritorious State of Maine residents, based on their demonstrated financial.
Who is eligible to receive a grant?
Maine residents with financial need pursuing accredited degree programs in undergraduate educational institutions are eligible. In general, the Foundation defines Maine residency as residence in Maine for four consecutive years immediately prior to the filing of the application. The Barking Foundation is an equal opportunity grantor. No one will be denied a grant because of affectional orientation, veteran’s status, race, gender, religion, age or physical ability.
Which degree progams are eligible?
We consider full or part-time students in any accredited undergraduate degree program, in or outside of Maine, who are pursuing a first-time associate or bachelor's degree.
How many grants are available each year?
The number of available grants changes annually depending on the investment earnings of the Foundation’s endowment. Generally, the Foundation awards an average of 50 grants each year. The grants are for $3000. A limited number of grants based on merit may be available for previous recipients.
What is the term of the grant?
Grants are made for one academic year and are paid directly to the degree-granting institution. Restrictions may be imposed depending on the applicant’s enrollment status.

What conditions apply to the receipt of a grant?
The recipient must meet the board’s definition of Maine residency, must demonstrate financial need, must be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary educational degree granting institution and must have received approval from the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Grant assistance shall be made by the Foundation at its sole discretion and is not subject to review or appeal. The Foundation has no obligation whatsoever to any particular applicant.
When are the applications due?
The application deadline is February 15th. Applications must be postmarked by that date. No e-mail or faxed applications will be accepted. Grant notification begins in late April; you will be contacted whether you receive a grant or not.
What if all the required paperwork is ot ready at once or if I cannot provide a particular piece?
You may send parts of the application separately, however all pieces must be in your file by the deadline date for you to be eligible. If you cannot provide a part of the application, contact the administrator.

Can applicants and recipients reapply?
Yes. You can apply as many times as you like. If you received a grant, you can reapply the next year, but you can only be awarded a grant twice. Renewal applicants must have a 3.0 average at the time of application.
